I have always been of the theory that less is more and decluttering is the perfect way to clean out the obstacles that might be stopping you from gaining some balance in your life. This can apply to every area in your life including relationships, friendships, home and work. Anything that creates mind clutter can have a serious effect on your mental state.
So where to start?
Over the years we all accumulate stuff! And a lot of useless stuff at that. We have a storeroom that is bursting at the seems with a lot of stuff the kids bring home, stuff we are given and just day to day clutter that ends up being put in the storeroom to get it out of sight. Clothes that don’t fit anymore or are not in fashion, toys that aren’t being used and general “where did that come from” items.
Our first instinct after we’ve decided to part ways with these items (after much counselling) is to throw them in the bin or council cleanup but with statistics like 20 million tonnes of household waste go into landfill each year it might be time to stop and think before we bin it.
- The Freecycle Network-The Freecycle Network is an entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (& getting) stuff for free in their own towns. It’s all about reuse and keeping good stuff out of landfills. Join a Freecycle Network in your city.
- Buy, Sell, Swap groups on Facebook- Why not make a bit of money from your old or unwanted things lying around? One man’s trash is another man’s treasure….but be prepared to price it right. Like anything in the world, it’s value is only what it is worth to the buyer.
- Charity Groups- In addition to the charity bins placed around your city, there are a number of groups who might be in the need of household items for the homeless, families or women seeking refuge.
- Gumtree- Like the Facebook groups, Gumtree is a place to sell all your unwanted items giving them to someone who can extend their shelf life. The app can be downloaded from itunes or Google Play.
Are you happy going back to the same job you had before the holidays and does it still feel right? If not it might be time to kick start the year with a new job in 2019. Is it something you really love or are you just paying the bills? Are your work colleagues people you like or are they people you don’t really like associating with? Could you still do the same job working part time?
If your place of employment is cluttering your life and offsetting your balance, there are always other opportunities if you feel it’s time for a change. Keep your eye’s on the employment sites, or talk to employment recruiters to see what other options are out there. Maybe it’s time to learn a new skill!
The start of a new year is a great time to re-evaluate all relationships in your life; friends, family and loved ones. Are you getting what you need from each relationship? Are you being heard and is the relationship a two way street not a one way road? Do you get the support you need?
Bad relationships can clutter your mind and interfere with living your best life and your best self. They can also cause you to become a different person and not for the better. Maybe distance yourself for a while from any relationships you feel are bringing negativity to your life. Reflect and reconnect when the time is right. It’s also a great time to make new friendships…take up some new hobbies and get out there and meet new people.
A new year is the perfect opportunity to declutter your life and identify areas that may be creating mental stress or concern.
