Jo Hannah is the CEO of Total Face Group. She’s both a highly experienced healthcare professional as well as an accomplished business manager.
Jo was formerly a business development manager at Allergan (who make Botox® and Juvederm®) training and educating in cosmetic injectable treatments. But Jo had big ideas for the medical aesthetic industry so partnered with Jane Fielding to establish Total Face Group in 2014 – the first group of cosmetic clinics to be listed on the Australian Stock Exchange.
We asked Jo about the latest clinical beauty treatments, how they work, and what they do.
INJECTABLES AND FILLERS
A great way to maintain a fresh, natural & healthy look. Anti-wrinkle and dermal filler treatments can help to refresh and rejuvenate your look by relaxing lines and wrinkles and adding volume to those areas which need it the most. As we age our face loses fat, muscles sag and lines become more persistent! These temporary treatments are great for enhancing our best features and slowing down the signs of ageing.
An anti-wrinkle treatment (the most commonly known is Botox®, another available in Australia is Dysport®) works to relax the muscle and in turn ease the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Most commonly treated areas are frown lines, forehead lines and crow’s feet around the eyes.
A dermal filler works to replace lost volume and fill facial folds and wrinkles creating a smoother, softer appearance. Most dermal fillers are made from hyaluronic acid gel, a sugar based product found naturally in the skin. These temporary fillers are absorbed by the body and reduce gradually over 6 – 18 months, mimicking the ageing process.
Fillers and injectables often get a bad rap, with many people scared of losing all movement in the face or looking frozen and overdone but when in the hands of a trained medical professional you can achieve facial harmony, symmetry and beautiful long-lasting results. It’s about looking a fresh, healthy version of yourself – not different or weird.
These treatments often work best together (like your shampoo and conditioner) and depending on your desired result may only take a single treatment to get a fantastic finished look. But a word of warning, these treatments do wear off over time and you will most likely need to refresh after three to six months. Make sure you visit your trusted aesthetic clinician regularly to maintain your natural look.
Soft, full lips are on the top of everyone’s wish list but many women are hesitant to enhance their lips due to the commonly seen ‘trout pout’ or ‘duck lips’ amongst celebrities, however this is the result of an overfilled lip not the filler itself. When treating lips with dermal fillers it is important to consider many parts of the lip including the fullness required, the lip borders, corners of the mouth and even the mouth surrounds. Ensuring you get a lip that suits your face and proportions is critical.
Lipsticks, liners and plumper products can only do so much when it comes to creating the appearance of a fuller lip and if you suffer from disproportioned or mis-shaped lips then they won’t do much for you at all. Instead, when working with a skilled clinician, a lip enhancement treatment is a much better, longer-lasting solution.
Following the treatment there may be some minor swelling, redness and a little bruising however, this is quick to disappear and can be easily concealed with make up. The results will last between six to twelve months and you will need to return periodically to maintain the appearance of your new pout. Get ready to invest in brighter colours of lipstick and love your new lips!
Ever noticed how drastically a celebrity’s face can change in terms of shape? Often their face will appear longer, with a slimmer jaw and more defined cheek bones – this is rarely the result of weight loss alone and often includes some help from cosmetic injectable treatments.
A large or square jaw appearance can be the result of an overly developed chewing muscle called the masseter. This muscle is often the cause of teeth grinding and tight jaw which can be quite painful and add to the appearance of a heavy jaw.
The jaw slimming injections weaken the masseter muscle causing them to relax and give the face a softer angle, as well as a softer bite.
This is a a quick treatment which only takes about fifteen minutes, the process involves injections of a muscle relaxant into the masseter muscle of the lower jaw and the downtime is minimal with patients returning to normal activities straight after their treatment. A few days after the treatment, noticeable results in the jawline can be observed, with full effects seen two weeks later. The treatments usually last between six months and twelve months after this time you will see the jawline become heavier again. Regular treatments are required to maintain the look.
Most of us have struggled to remove those areas of stubborn fat – no matter how much we exercise or diet! Fortunately there is now a treatment which permanently removes these bulges with no needles, no downtime and no surgery. Results can be seen as quick as 6 weeks meaning you can be ready for your bikini before Spring even shows itself!
A non-invasive procedure (nothing like liposuction or other fat removal treatments you see on TV) CoolSculpting® cools the fat causing the fat cells to die through a process called cryolipolisis. The treatments take just 45 minutes during which time you can relax, read a book or catch up on emails – you can go straight back to your normal duties after your treatment.
Most popular areas for treatment are the lower stomach, love handles, inner and outer thighs, arms, bra fat (that annoying bulge that hangs over your bra strap!) and double chins.
Many clinics have 2 CoolSculpting systems which means you treat multiple areas of the body at once. The discomfort experienced varies from person to person, during the treatment itself the area feels cold and often goes numb so discomfort it minimal. Straight after the treatment the treated area needs to be massaged for 2 minutes, which helps kill the fat cells and break up the frozen cells. For the next couple of days you may be slightly swollen and tender but this soon subsides and the excitement about a new body beings!
Skin Solutions – Cosmeceuticals, MICRODERMABRASION AND COSMETIC PEELS
Skin is the largest organ of the body and the skin on our face is exposed to a barrage of daily attacks from many extrinsic factors such as the elements and pollution. ‘Cosmeceuticals’, also know as Medical Grade Skin Care are skin care products that combine the effectiveness of active ingredients whilst offering the ability to change and improve the skin’s appearance similar to a cosmetic product. With high percentages of active ingredients and unique delivery methods, cosmeceuticals help create a change in damaged skin, going hand in hand with all anti ageing facial treatments.
Once the skin is being ‘fed’ the right ingredients, dermal treatments can be used to target specific concerns, leaving the skin refreshed, refined and rejuvenated.
Microdermabrasion is a ‘deep clean’ for the skin – a relaxing treatment which uses a crystal or diamond tip to gently buff the skin surface to remove dead skin cells which contribute to the appearance of ageing or a dull skin tone. A Microdermabrasion treatment can be completed in less than an hour and is often a great addition to other skin treatments such as a peel, laser skin rejuvenation and skincare products.
Another treatment which has received a bit of a bad rap in recent times (everyone knows that episode of Sex and the City where Samantha Jones gets a Peel!) however Cosmetic Peels come in a variety of formats and can safely and effectively treat acne, congestion, pigmentation, dull skin, the refining of pores and the appearance of wrinkling in the skin.
The type of peel used will be determined by your skincare professional who will carry out an assessment of your skin and determine which peel is best suited to the nature of your skin concern.
The peel treatment itself will take less than thirty minutes and involve a solution being applied to the skin. Tingling is a common feeling as the cells begin to react to the treatment, which will then see the skin regenerate and gently peel itself over the next few days, replacing old, damaged cells with healthy new ones, resulting in a more refined and youthful appearance.
The downtime to recover is a few days, however other than some minor sensitivity and perhaps a little redness, you won’t even know that the recovery is happening. You will be advised on how to best care for your skin following the treatment with prescribed home care instructions which will prevent any irritations or the flaring of the skin while in recovery.
Note: Please choose your cosmetic provider wisely. Clinical Beauty Treatments should be with an experienced quality professional and performed within a medical clinic environment. Don’t be afraid to ask your clinician what product they are using and why.
